Ithaca Applefest 2017

Applefest. An event that ignites excitement in Ithaca College students, and local residents. My friends, and I have talked about this event since we’ve returned to Ithaca in August. Applefest truly has something for everyone, and this year was no different.

Applefest was held September 29th-October 1st in downtown Ithaca, NY. As the name implies, there are tons of local farms selling apples and apple-related products. Apple cider, apple wine, apple pie, and even apple pizza are just a few of the delicious apple-based items you can purchase at the festival. Baked goods, and fresh produce grown by local farmers are also available.

With so many delicious sights and smells, it is nearly impossible to choose what you want to eat. Every year I try to choose something new, but always return to my staples:

The Lobster Mac from Macarollin’ is sure to fill you up. This is no ordinary macaroni and cheese, but rather it takes that comfort-food staple and turns it into something better. Lobster, goat cheese, lemon breadcrumbs, and a sherry shallot gastrique tops this decadent dish. It’s cheesy, yet the layers of different flavors keeps it interesting.

The Appleknockers “Walk-Away Apple Sundae” is delicious. There are plenty of other vendors that boast similar treats, but this one is superior., An apple is cut into slices with an antique looking apple-slicer, and topped with: hot caramel, fresh whipped cream, and nuts. It sounds simple, but the way you can truly taste the freshness of every ingredient is what makes this dessert so divine. The apple was crisp, and the sweet toppings just enhanced the natural flavor.

Eating isn’t the only thing you can do at Apple Fest (although, it’s usually the best part). There are tons of local vendors selling crafts, and other services. It always feels great to shop local, and know that you’re directly supporting someone doing what they love!

I purchased this stainless steel ring from Elaan Greenfield. It’s simple, and goes perfectly with the rest of my rings. It also now represents the memory of my last Applefest while attending Ithaca College.

As expected, Applefest was a great event that I always look forward to when I come back up to Ithaca. If you are ever in the Ithaca area, I highly recommend you go!
